Facebook servers and cold storage in action
Facebook brings a little California charm to their North Carolina data center, but doesn't lose sight of its tech necessities.
The Facebook environment encourages cross-team collaboration between IT and facility groups, as well as stable, easily repaired infrastructure. Open Compute servers require little tooling to remove and replace failed components. Technicians can also disconnect individual servers for maintenance, repair or replacement without manually moving workloads off the hardware. IT racks up hardware in a standardized manner, making it easy for facilities to distribute the load and cooling requirements.
There's also a bit of fun in the office spaces. You might see the Lego room and think Silicon Valley, despite the humid North Carolina air outside.
