IBM zEnterprise 114: Hot or not?
IBM hopes to push more big iron into mid-market companies with its lower-cost  zEnterprise 114 mainframes. The z114’s Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) is one of three IBM specialty processors designed to offload specific work from mainframe general processors.  Customers running Linux-based workloads can offload work from general processors onto the IFL, thereby reducing software costs.  IBM claimed that a fully configured machine running Linux for System z, can create and maintain a Linux virtual server for as little as $500 per year.

OpenShift Express features MySQL support
Developers using Red Hat’s OpenShift Express cloud management tool now get access to new features—including support for the popular MySQL database.  The tool, announced this week,  also enables the creation of up to five applications–up from one–and supports server-side bundling.

Linux coming to a car near you
Earlier this month, Toyota joined The Linux Foundation, saying the Linux open source model would give it  the flexibility needed to develop software for in-vehicle computer systems. The Toyota Motor Corp., which became a gold member, is the first major auto maker and one of the largest companies overall, to join the effort. Gold members pay annual fees of $100,000 to the non-profit foundation.

“Linux gives us the flexibility and technology maturity we require to evolve our In-Vehicle-Infotainment and communications systems to address the expectations of our customers,” said Kenichi Murata, an electronics manager at Toyota, said in a statement. "The Linux Foundation provides us with a neutral forum in which we can collaborate with the world’s leading technology companies on open innovation that accelerates that evolution.”
