Open Season: Firm bets the farm on open source database

Novell announced this week it has signed agreements with four white-box PC manufacturers who will globally distribute PCs pre-loaded with SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 (SLED10).

European manufacturers ETegro Technologies, MAXDATA and Transtec along with R Cubed Technologies will sell notebooks and desktop computers with SLED10 pre-installed.

These partnerships mirror a recent Novell announcement with Lenovo regarding the first Linux-based ThinkPad mobile workstations, which also run SLED10.

Red Hat secures European customer win

At Oracle World last week, Red Hat, Inc. announced that Denkavit Group, a leading European animal food manufacturer in the Netherlands, has implemented Oracle EnterpriseOne ERP suite running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) across its IT systems.

With this migration Denkavit is the first European implementation of Oracle EnterpriseOne on Red Hat Linux.

Novell's Nat Friedman Named Technologist of the Year

VARBusiness Magazine has named Nat Friedman, Novell's chief technology and strategy officer for open source, as its first ever Technologist of the Year.

Friedman was honored for innovation in Novell's most recent desktop Linux offering, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 (SLED10). VARBusiness, which covers the business of technology integration, honored Friedman at an awards ceremony held Oct. 23, 2006, in Huntington Beach, Calif.
