OpenXML vs. OpenDocument Format (ODF)

An expert discusses possible issues that could arise from using OpenXML and OpenDocument Format.

What is the difference between the Microsoft's OpenXML format and the OpenDocument Format? Are they interchangeable? Where is ODF most heavily used/adopted as a standard?

I haven't extensively tested ODF and the Microsoft XML format, and I don't know where the ODF is most heavily adopted. However, to predict what would happen with open formats and Microsoft, we might look back at what happened with Microsoft and Java.

Java from Sun is "write once, run anywhere" and runs on multiple platforms. Yet, when Microsoft started working with Java, there were problems with that cross-platform ability.
