Links for a newbie: Getting started with Linux and networking

I'm pursuing a degree in computer science. I have no knowledge of Linux, but am interested in it. I know a bit about Windows. Can you please tell me the prerequisites of networking with Linux? What do I need to know before I start it? I have started on shell programming. Are there any Web links you might recommend that will help me?

I'm really glad to hear that you're pursuing a degree in Computer Science. I do not know of any computer science curriculum that does not include Linux. I suggest that you download a Linux operating system from kernel.org or sourceforge.org and install it. Sourceforge.org and media outlets like SearchEnterpriseLinux.com can also help keep you up to date with the latest open source projects.

One of the best things that you can do is to learn shell programming -- try using Perl and play with the Linux commands within the Shell window.

Editor's note: There are several Best Web Link categories you can browse to help you get started. Check out:
