I am giving a cics RETURN statement in order to exit from a program. After this statement is executed, the control shifts to CICS but the map displayed by the transaction does not get cleared. How does get it done?
I do not understand what you mean by 'Cleared' in this question.
If you are getting one map overlayed by another, then use XC SEND MAP ERASE which empties the screen before the map is sent.
If you are interested in getting the flow sent to the terminal under your own control, use XC SEND CONTROL TERMINAL WAIT which will flow any pending screens to the terninal (which would normally be sent later on).
