The following presentation was given at Data Center Decisions Spring 2005 in New York.

Virtualization, like other major IT technologies in the past, is receiving a lot of marketing attention from leading systems vendors, and is hyped by the press and analyst firms as the "next big thing" in IT. However, Virtualization is more than just the buzzword of the year. It potentially represents a fundamental transformation of IT operations. Virtualization involves decoupling workloads from the functional details of the platforms on which they are hosted. Tony Iams, vice president and senior analyst, Ideas International, examines all the factors IT professionals must consider when evaluating virtualization solutions such as virtual machines, partitions, resource management server, blade servers, provisioning software, and grid computing. The discussion explores and quantifies the key factors that need to be considered during the selection process, and reviews the pain points and challenges experienced by users who have already deployed virtualization technology.
