The following presentation was given at Data Center Decisions Spring 2005 in New York.

Everyone has heard about cabinets running 10 kW, 15 kW, and more. The rash of products claiming to solve the cooling problem nearly rivals the "low carb" craze, but server crashes and network outages due to overheating are nothing to laugh about.

Are these power claims real, or just a "marketing scare"? If real, what will really keep this expensive technology cool? What about "liquid cooling" and water in my data center? How do you mix "high heat" equipment with more standard hardware in both new and existing facilities? Robert E. McFarlane, Interport Division President, Shen, Milsom & Wilke, Inc. explains Power, Heat and Cooling realities in practical, understandable terms. We will discuss the pro's and con's of different methods and products for cooling full data centers, and pockets of high performance equipment. We will suggest some simple ways of improving cooling performance in nearly every existing data center, and answer the often-heard question of why just adding air conditioners or lowering the temperature usually doesn't work.
