DEFINITION - The Cisco Catalyst Blade Switch 3020 is a switch designed for the Hewlett-Packard (HP) BladeSystem c-Class of blade servers. The 3020 is scalable to accommodate anticipated network growth. It incorporates advanced security functions and optimizes traffic flow control for business applications expected to become increasingly complex and and sensitive over time.

The 3020 incorporates eight external Gigabit Ethernet ports for data centers or LANs (local area networks). Up to four of these slots can be activated for fiber optic use. The 3020 also has Gigabit Ethernet connections for up to 16 internal server blades. The external ports operate at 10, 100 or 1000 Mbps (megabits per second) with RJ-45 jacks or 1000 Mbps with SFP (small form-factor pluggable) fiber optic modules. The 3020, which Cisco calls the switch module, includes an IOS (Input/Output Supervisor) image for management and configuration through a Web browser or Cisco command-line interface. The user can manage the switch module through a dedicated network isolated from the main switched traffic. Alternatively, the switch module can be managed through any of the external uplink ports.

The HP BladeSystem c-Class enables administrators to shift pre-wired resources with virtualized Ethernet and fiber optic connections. The BladeSystem c-Class also enables users to individually manage the power options for multiple server blades, chassis or racks. The Cisco Catalyst Blade Switch 3020 is powered from the blade server backplane. Temperature regulation is performed by the server.
