Bronze Award:
The SPARC Enterprise T5440 server from Sun Microsystems and Fujitsu
The SPARC Enterprise T5440 server is the industry's first quad-socket server with 256 simultaneous processing threads and 512 GB of memory in just four rack units. The box includes processors running at 1.2 GHz or 1.4 GHz, with eight cores per processor, and up to 512 GB of memory. It also includes open source virtualization with Sun's Solaris Containers and Logical Domains, and is capable of virtualizing and consolidating hundreds of workloads onto a single system.
One T5440 user, a massive, European-based Web hosting company called Strato, reported, "After testing the new quad-socket Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 server, we discovered that only one T5440 is sufficient to handle the whole load and can replace 10 of our existing Sun Fire T2000 servers."
The Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440 server also set seven world records on industry standard benchmarks in 2008, including the best four processor results on two-tier SAP Sales and Distribution Standard Application Benchmark, Oracle's Siebel CRM 8.0 Platform Sizing and Performance Program and single-node SPECjAppServer2004.
Pricing for the T5400 starts at about $45,000 and maxes out at around $200,000.
