IBM System x iDataPlex dx360 M2

IBM's iDataPlex server design took the top spot with our judges this year in the Servers category. IBM debuted the iDataPlex server form factor in April 2008, but Big Blue's latest souped-up x86 machine boasts Intel's 5500 series Nehalem processors and lots of fast memory.

The iDataPlex dx360 M2 ships with the following features.
  • Two Intel Xeon Processor 5500 series (quad-core) per server (up to 168 per iDataPlex rack)
  • Up to 128 GB of DDR-3 1333 MHz memory per server
  • 1 PCI-Express 16x Gen 2 I/O slot with support for full-height, full-length card per server, 2 x 8 PCI-Express capabilities
  • Up to 5.0 TB HDD storage per server with 2U Flex chassis and up to 12.0 TB HDD storage per 3U storage chassis
  • Up to two servers per 2U 19" chassis mountable in a standard enterprise rack.
Designers of the iDataPlex had energy efficiency in mind. The server's half-depth design reduces the airflow required across the components, lowering the power needed for cooling. High-efficiency power supplies, larger, better-optimized fans in the 2U chassis, and power management capabilities provide further efficiencies to minimize the dx360 M2's power requirements.

These systems were designed for large, high-performance computing installations. These high-powered servers would not be a fit for older data centers that can't handle the iDataPlex's power density demands.
