AMD adds to its six-core Opteron server chip line
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) has added new versions of its six-core Opteron x86 processor that are either more energy efficient or more powerful than the original.

The six-core Opteron debuted a couple of months ago. The new versions include the HE model, a 2 GHz or 2.1 GHz chip that consumes 55 watts (W) of power, and the SE model, a more powerful version running at 2.8 GHz but that consumes 105 W. The original runs 2.2 GHz to 2.6 GHZ and consumes 75 W.

HP is expected to be the first server manufacturer to sell boxes featuring the new chips, with other server hardware vendrors to follow.

Emerson boosts capacity of Liebert UPS unit
Emerson Network Power has increased the capacity of its Liebert NXL unit from 400 kilovolt-amperes ( kVA) to 750 kVA.

The unit can now come in 250 kVA, 300 kVA, 400 kVA and 750 kVA models. Now the Liebert NXL can come with a battery monitoring application called Albér BDSi that reports on battery status items such as internal resistance, total voltage, and temperature, enabling users to proactively replace backup batteries. The software supports up to six battery cabinets

Future Facilities updates data center CFD software
The new version of 6SigmaDC from Future Facilities includes features to address the cooling design of IT equipment, the design and layout of new and upgraded data centers, and the configuration of racks and cabinets.

The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software aids users in designing a data center for proper airflow, which can make the facility's cooling infrastructure more energy efficient. Next to IT equipment, data center cooling consumes the most energy in a data center.
