Microsoft to open two mega data centers: News in brief

The Dublin data center is Microsoft's first mega data center built outside the U.S. It is 303,000 square feet, with 5.4 megawatts (MW) of power, which the company can expand to 22.2 MW as business grows, according to the blog. The facility uses outside air economization to cool it year round, resulting in better power efficiency.

The Chicago facility is more than 700,000 square feet and will have up to 60 MW of power. Two-thirds of the Chicago data center will house containerized servers; prepackaged units with up to 2,500 servers that can be wheeled into the facility and made operational within hours. The density inside the containers can exceed 10 times that of traditional data centers, according to the blog.

The new features within software add capabilities to four areas: discovery and tracking, management, real-time change detection of unauthorized changes, and application integration.

The new capabilities in Oracle Enterprise Manager should help IT pros track and manage dependencies between application components and their associated configurations. It also includes real-time detection of unauthorized changes, and application integration.

The Mesquite, Texas, facility has an on-site substation that will support 100 million watts (W) of power and is expected to be one of the country's five most powerful data centers, according to the developer, CAPSTAR. The initial installation will provide 40 million W of power.
