Dell launches consulting services, new PowerEdge servers
Dell launched a new virtualization and data center consulting services program today, along with some new PowerEdge servers.

Dell's virtualization solutions and services make it simpler to virtualize a data center. Services include data center planning and management, disaster recovery, data management to diagnose problems and recommend storage solutions, and facilities efficiency to resolve space, power and cooling issues.

Also, Dell now offers "business ready" virtualization configurations for large data centers and small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). The data center setup combines Dell PowerEdge M-series blades and EqualLogic PS6000 iSCSI storage, Cisco Catalyst networking switches, VMware vSphere 4 and PlateSpin Migrate from Novell. The SMB configuration includes the PowerEdge R710 with Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V and other virtualization infrastructure technologies geared toward SMBs.

Dell also updated some servers with the Intel Xeon 5500 series processors, including the PowerEdge T410 and T710 tower servers for SMBs and the PowerEdge R410 rack server for HPC environments. The servers are available now starting at $999. The PowerEdge T710 server will be available in the coming weeks.

IDC: Server spending slump to continue
Spending in the worldwide server market is expected to decline 29.6% to $10.6 billion in the second quarter of 2009, marking the fourth consecutive quarter of year-over-year spending decline for servers and a continued deterioration of the server market worldwide, according to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Server Forecast released Wednesday.

The IDC forecasts eight more quarters of year-over-year revenue decline and believes 2Q09 represents the largest year-over-year server spending decline that the market will experience.

In total, server spending in all market segments -- volume, midrange and enterprise -- is forecasted to have declined 22.1% year over year in 2009, IDC reported.

Digital Realty Trust earns LEED Gold
Digital Realty Trust earned LEED-CI Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for its 1500 Space Park data center facility in Santa Clara, Calif., the company reported Wednesday.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)'s Green Building Rating System is a certification program and benchmark for the design, construction and operation of green buildings. LEED for Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI) is the USGBC's certification program for high-performance green interiors.

A key element cited for the LEED-CI Gold certification is 1500 Space Park's use of airside economization, which reduces HVAC energy costs by using cool external air to complement internal air cooling technologies while maintaining indoor air quality.
