Cisco Systems Inc. initially introduced UCS as a blade server system, but it will now be available in either blade or C-Series rack server versions.

The UCS C-Series will include the following models.

  • Cisco UCS C 250 M1; a two-socket, 2 rack unit (RU) rack mount server with Cisco's Extended Memory technology
  • Cisco UCS C 210 M1: a two-socket, 2RU rack mount server that houses up to 16 local hard drives; and
  • Cisco UCS C 200 M1: a two-socket, 1RU rack mount server

The announcement was made at the Cisco Partner Summit on Wednesday and focused on the benefits of UCS for channel partners: By offering blade and rackmount server options UCS may help channel partners appeal to a broader market, Cisco reported.

The company is also offering two new certifications; data center architect and data center engineer to train partners on the UCS. It also launched its Authorized Partner Program for partners who want to sell the rackmount Unified Computing C-Series. All Cisco Data Center Network Infrastructure (DCNI) Specialized Partners will be able to sell the new rackmount servers after completing online training and an exam.

Cisco also announced a new Data Center Channel Solution Program to validate other vendor products that work with UCS and will expand the Value Incentive Program (VIP) beyond networking to UCS and a new VIP track for storage products.

According to an anonymous Cisco employee, UCS will begin shipping within the next few weeks.
