HP updates ProLiant systems Several HP ProLiant servers now support the new six-core AMD Opteron processors, and the company launched an entirely new HP ProLiant platform with twice the density of rack servers and better performance per watt.

HP's new compact ProLiant system is called the DL1000 Multi-Node series and includes the DL4x170h G6, offering four server nodes in a single two-unit chassis and the HP ProLiant DL2x170h G6, which provides two server nodes and expanded I/O capabilities. Both are based on Intel Nehalem chips.

The HP ProLiant DL4x170h and the HP ProLiant DL2x170h G6 servers are available at a starting price of $4,909 and $2,819, respectively.

The new ProLiant G6 servers based on AMD Opteron six-core processors includes the HP ProLiant DL785, DL585, DL385 and DL165 rack servers and the HP ProLiant BL465, BL495c and BL685c blades. These new systems now ship from $1,679 to $17,029.

Server vendors ship AMD Istanbul-based systems
In addition to HP, other server vendors ship Istanbul chips, including Dell Inc., Sun Microsystems Inc., SGI (or Silicon Graphics International) and Verari Systems Inc.

The AMD Istanbul will be in six Dell PowerEdge servers, including the PowerEdge 2970, R805 and R905 rack servers and the PowerEdge M605, M805, M905 blade servers.

Sun Microsystems will launch systems based on the new AMD Opteron chips to its x64 rackmount and blade server systems. Cray Inc. will also use AMD's new Opterons chip in its XT series systems.

In addition, Verari's BladeRack 2 X-Series blade server platforms and some rack servers will support AMD's new six-core Opteron processor, and SGI announced immediate availability of servers based on the new AMD Opteron chips in a variety of server models on Monday.

IBM certifies RamSan-500 SSD
Texas Memory Systems' RamSan-500 solid state disk system has been certified as interoperable with IBM's System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC).

Solid state disks (SSD) like RamSan-500 help overcome the I/O bottlenecks commonly encountered with traditional hard disk-based storage.

The RamSan-500 delivers 100,000 I/O per second (IOPS) sustained random read, 25,000 IOPS sustained random writes and two GB per second (GBps) of sustained random read or write bandwidth on only 300 watts of power. The system can be SAN-attached with up to eight 4GBps Fibre Channel ports. Multiple RamSan-500s can be scaled to deliver additional high-performance capacity.
