Intel's Nehalem sparks spate of new offerings
Intel's official release of its Xeon 5500 "Nehalem" processor opened the floodgates for new product releases from server and software vendors.
HP updated its ProLiant server line with the new Nehalem-based G6 server platform, which also includes a number of new management software features and a new interconnect technology called HP Virtual Connect Flex-10 Ethernet module.
Both Dell and IBM made similar announcements, as did Rackable Systems. Fujitsu updated five of its dual--socket Primergy S5 servers with Nehalem; and NEC has its Nehalem-based server, with its Express5800/Sigmablade and NEC Express5800 rack servers. Liquid Computing updated its LiquidIQ 3.0 Unified Computing System with Nehalem, and Verari Systems updated its BladeRack 2 X-Series platforms with Intel's Xeon 5500 series chip. Finally, Sun Microsystems' Solaris platform, including the Solaris 10 operating system (OS) and OpenSolaris were updated for compatibility with the new Intel chip.

Sun pushes x64 systems
Sun Microsystems is promoting its Sun Fire x64 servers with public user testimonials. Sun, which may soon be acquired by IBM , experienced a year-over-year revenue decline of 14.1% in the x86 server market during the fourth quarter of 2008, according to IDC. But Sun's x64 server line represents an area of growth for the company, with factory revenue over 21.3 % year over year in the fourth quarter of 2008, according to IDC data.

Some of the companies that touted Sun's x64 servers include Blue Sky Studios, Clemson University and Last.fm.

Sun lets users try out its x64 systems for 60 days through Sun's Try and Buy program.
