IBM updates hardware with Intel's Nehalem
IBM updated four of its x86 rack servers and blades with Intel's new "Nehalem" Xeon 5500 series processors, claiming the upgrade boosts the systems' energy efficiency and performance.

The servers – which include the IBM BladeCenter HS22, System x series x3650 M2 and x3550 M2, and the System x iDataPlex dx360 M2 – also include more memory, storage and I/O, which better suits these boxes for virtualization.

IBM also updated its management software. Systems Director 6.1 automates management of virtual and physical assets and supports IBM Power Systems, System z, storage and non-IBM x86 servers. IBM claims the software can save up to 44% in management expenses.

More information about these systems can be found on IBM's website.

Recession bolsters need for Windows-open source compatibility
The tightness of IT budgets bolsters Microsoft's contention that more shops are running open source apps on existing Windows infrastructure. These companies need to use their existing IT skills base and stretch the productivity of their installed technology, Sam Ramji, senior director of Microsoft's platform strategy, told SearchITChannel.com.

Gregory Rosenberg, the CEO of RICIS Inc., a specialist in open source work, agreed that Windows has become an increasingly popular foundation for open source applications. Windows ability to run PHP, Python and other code is a major reason.
