SunGard Availability Services opened its third data center disaster recovery site in Philadelphia, a facility it says provides robust power and cooling redundancies.

The 120,000-square-foot facility boosts SunGard's space in Philadelphia to 350,000 square feet. Worldwide, the company now has about 4 million square feet of data center space for its availability services as well as locations in more than two dozen U.S. cities. It expects 30,000 customer site visits in Philadelphia alone this year.

The new facility has two independent power sources, a backup generator and a redundant cooling system, according to SunGard.

Data center colocation cost jumps in Europe
The cost of colocating data center servers in Europe jumped to 8.5% per rack last year, according to the U.K. tracking company Tariff Consultancy Ltd..

The company surveyed 14 European countries, finding the biggest spikes in Portugal, Denmark and France. The cheapest European countries for hosting servers are Italy and Germany, which are less than half that of Denmark, which is the most expensive.

The increase has much to do with power costs, which rose 20% over the past year, the company said. Data center colocation companies tend to charge customers for more than just real estate. Advanced Data Centers, a Sacramento, Calif.-based data center colocation company, has said that it bills customers for renting the space, for metered power for the IT equipment and for a share of the cost of cooling the building. If the electricity rate increases, the cost per rack will increase with it.

Server cabinet vendor opens research center
Chatsworth Products Inc., a data center server rack and cabinet vendor, opened a new testing facility in Georgetown, Texas, and it's available for customers to visit.

The Research, Development and Training Center is about 10,000 square feet and will be used for research and product testing.
