Hosting provider offers carbon-footprint calculator
Rackspace will offer a free online carbon calculator in an effort to "drive awareness around green," according to one Rackspace executive.

John Engates, the chief technology officer at the data center hosting provider, said the tool -- which was developed together with NativeEnergy, a carbon offsetting business – will calculate a company's overall carbon footprint, not just that of its data center. So the calculator asks questions about the total number of employees, how they travel to work, how much the utility bills are, and how much IT infrastructure there is.

Rackspace is a member of the Green Grid, a nonprofit consortium of IT vendors and users that advocates more energy-efficient IT.

Engineering firm opens data center services division
Bluestone Energy Services' new data center services division is designed to help companies improve data center power and cooling infrastructure.

Adam Fairbanks, previously a software engineer at Cisco, will head Bluestone's data center services division. The division will examine companies' infrastructure components – such as cooling units, backup power and lighting systems – and make recommendations for design and equipment to improve data center efficiency. Bluestone is based in Norwell, Mass., with an office in Chicago.

CyrusOne expanding data center colocation spots
CyrusOne is expanding its Dallas- and Houston-area data centers by some 100,000 square feet. The company more than doubled square footage in its Dallas-area data center, in Lewisville, adding 81,000 square feet to its existing 80,000 square feet. In Houston, the company will add 25,000 square feet to its existing 125,000 square feet of space.

The data center colocation company says it offers high-density server environments of up to 1,000 watts per square foot.
