IBM announced CICS Transaction Server for z/OS V3.1 on Wednesday, which promises to makes CICS even more Web services-friendly.

Transaction Server V3.1 also includes CICS Transaction Gateway V6.0. Some key features of CICS Transaction Gateway V6.0 are enhanced performance and better systems management and security.

"The latest version of CICS Transaction Server continues the path of IBM's investment in the mainframe infrastructure and joins with the latest versions of WebSphere, DB2 and IMS, enabling companies to deploy Web services and participate in SOA [service-oriented architecture]," Dibbe Edwards, director of CICS products at IBM, said in a statement.

A key feature of Transaction Server V3.1 is better Web services integration, so CICS applications can be extended to an SOA. It also has support for the SSL security protocol.

The release also has performance and system management improvements. For example, C/C++ applications will run with better performance. Also, IBM has extended CICSPlex System Manager Web User Interface, thus making management of the system easier.
