The ProLiant BL460c G6 blade includes two 2.53 GHz quad-core Intel Xeon processors. An HP BladeSystem chassis can fit 16 of these half-height blades, so there is potential to pack 128 processor cores in 10U of rack space. The list price for a fully stocked blade chassis is about $110,000.
HP also released a telco version of its Itanium-based Integrity BL860c blade and its ProLiant DL380 G6 rack server that includes the Nehalem chips. Its new storage array, the StorageWorks MSA2000fc G2, is also built for NEBS compliance and supports up to 24 146 GB SAS disks in a 2U enclosure.
Upsite study finds benefits of blanking panels
A new paper from Upsite Technologies shows the benefits of using blanking panels in data center airflow management.
The study, paid for by Upsite but conducted by an unnamed third party, found that using Upsite's blanking panels -- which fill in empty rack slots -- essentially saved the data center 7 degrees Fahrenheit at the server intakes. That would enable data center managers to raise the set points on their air conditioners by 7 degrees.
The study concluded that blanking panels could save thousands of dollars a year, both in operating costs for the cooling and capital costs, because they reduce the need to buy more cooling units. In two scenarios, one high-density and one low-density, the study found that data center managers could save $137,395 and $30,594 a year, respectively.
