I have been toying with the idea of having our DFHSM tape backups go directly to offsite tape drives in our vault. Our mainframes are outsourced. My contacts at that company don't know of any other organization attempting to do this. Do you know of anyone? Would there be any kind of documentation to help me prove or disprove this idea?

The article DFSMShsm -- The Most Incredible Data Mover! may be the sort of thing you're looking for, as might the article EMC CopyCross Implementation in an IBM DFSMShsm Environment. The IBM Redbook DFSMShsm Fast Replication Technical Guide should also be of help. I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for as a customer reference, but Google the character string HSM "Remote Tape Backup". Also, using Advanced Search on IBM.com for the character strings HSM "Remote Tape Backup" and DFSMShsm "Remote Tape Backup" will provide some possibilities. The hits also include non-HSM and non-mainframe solutions, so you need to weed through them to find exactly what you're looking for.
