QUESTION POSED ON: 24 October 2005
What can you advise to a data center designer about air conditioning specifications in extreme density?

>
I'll be writing a blog in a few days that will talk some about this. But suffice it to say that there are several ways to do it today: air boost fans for cabinets up to about 8 kW (even though some advertise more, I don't recommend planning on it); liquid cooled cabinets; heat containment rooms; and special "spot cooling" systems. There will certainly be more to come. One thing is certain. You will have either chilled water or some kind of refrigerant running to your cabinets or hardware if you intend to handle the load densities that will be hitting you in the next couple of years, so it's time to start accepting that fact. These high levels of concentrated heat simply cannot be cooled with under-floor air alone -- and if you try to do it, you'll probably introduce a number of other problems.
