Vendors like Platform Computing and United Devices, who have been in the commercial grid business for years, would likely say that grid is more than ready for primetime. At one level, grid solutions use distributed computing technologies to take best advantage of existing IT resources. Systems vendors have a firm understanding of these benefits and of grid's role in current and future offerings. IBM's focus on delivering vertically-focused grid solutions underscores the fact that while no two IT infrastructures are alike, specific industries tend to rely on common IT processes and applications. That, in turn, can ease the development of commercial grid-based solutions. More importantly, grid-supported solutions support, in one way or another, virtually every systems vendor's end-to-end IT strategy, from IBM's OnDemand to HP's Adaptive Enterprise. Grid computing may seem like a brand new thing, but the fact is that it is a proven technology whose influence is expanding.
