In a data center, a friendly name is a title given to an application file, certificate or other IT asset so that a human being can easily remember the name and perhaps even understand some basic information about the asset's purpose.

Friendly names are assigned to complement unique identifiers that are comprised of numeric or alphanumeric code by default. For example, if an administrator creates a new VMware virtual disk and the disk is named Windows 8-f001.vmdk, the administrator might give it a friendly name like FinanceLab4 to indicate that the virtual machine is the fourth server used in the finance department's development project.

Unlike unique identifiers, friendly names can be changed.
