I think there are really two important trends. One is the ability to mirror data over greater distances, making it more practical to construct and operate true backup data centers farther apart than ever before. But I believe your question has more to do with the trends in an individual data center. Without question, the answer to that is the consolidation of hardware. The increasing use of blade servers and virtual servers, combined with more compact, higher capacity storage is concentrating heat loads in smaller areas, making it difficult to cool and to manage.
