PEAR functionality in MySQL

An expert describes PEAR and what it does in MySQL.

What is PEAR and how does it work with MySQL?
PEAR is the PHP Extension and Application Repository. It is a library of PHP code packages, including a database class which can be used as an abstracted interface to MySQL (and other database management systems). PEAR packages are easy to install, and align to a coding standard which makes the open-source model a little easier on new developers. See http://pear.php.net for more details.
