I don't believe there is a max string length for oem-banner, as I cannot find anything out there that appears to limit the string size. Before making a change of this type that you feel might crash your system, I would send an e-mail to Sun support, just following up to ensure there is nothing low-level that could crash the system or mess with the bios. Or just use these commands on your test systems, before putting them in production. By the way, that should always be the case when you are using new features on any production mission-critical environment.
