64-bit architecture and COBOL

How does z/os 64-bit architecture impact the way we design and ultimately compile our COBOL apps?

Not at all. Personally, I do not expect any AMODE 64 applications to be written on z/OS, since many applications still run fine with AMODE 24. If you use C/C++ and compile for AMODE 64, then you have code that cannot mix with any existing code, so it does not affect how you would compile COBOL at all. There is no AMODE 64 COBOL compiler and no apparent strong need for one, so we have not implemented one yet. For more information, please see the z/OS FAQ page.
